The project is located in one historical district of the
urban area of Berlin, where is the north of central
park Tiergarten, named as Cultural Plaza. The site
besides the New National Gallery designed by Mies
von der Rohe and the Berliner Philharmonie
designed by Hans Scharoun. Considered the term
of Urban planning, the design followed the planning
concept in 2005, extend the colonnade which
surrounded the Gallery Plaza to the entrance of the
new building and redesigned the form of colonnade.
Meanwhile the new building completed the urban
neighborhood.
Therefore the new building represented as a
courtyard surrounded by three sides. One of the is
designed as the atrium of the whole and arranged
with staircase, elevator and platform to satisfy the
requirement of vertical communication.the function of
the “gallery ” included exhibition hall, archives and
library, studio and lecture hall. Hence the new building
is defined as a public academic center instead of just
a space of store and exhibition.
